SHU FILLS OUT COACHING STAFF

August 18, 2006

Seton Hall Fills out their Coaching Staff (Daily Record) with Bobby Gonzalez adding former Marist assistant Stephen Sauers as director of basketball operations and former Pirates point guard Shaheen Holloway as the program's administrative assistant.

They join assistant coaches Dermon Player, Geoff Billet and Kevin Murphy on the staff.

Sauers spent the last year at the Hoop Group of Neptune, where he was responsible for the recruitment of high school student-athletes to company events. He also was director of the eastern invitational camps and Top 100 clinics for the group. This is the same position that Pitt assistant Mike Rice held prior to working at St. Joseph's (PA) as an assistant for Phil Martelli. Sauers' father, Richard "Doc" Sauers, won more than 700 games as the coach at Albany State.

Holloway played for the Pirates from 1996-2000, leaving as the school's all-time assist leader and played at St. Patrick's in Elizabeth as a high school star. He has been an assistant coach at Bloomfield Tech under Nick Marinello most recently.

Seton Hall received their second commitment from the class of 2007 when Nigerian JUCO prospect Austin Okosum committed to Bobby Gonzalez and the Pirates yesterday. As a freshmen, Okosum played at NAIA school Georgetown College in Kentucky. Georgetown College is usually a popular place for Division 1-A transfers. After averaging 2.4 PPG and 2.7 rebounds in under 10 minutes a game, Okosum decided to take his game toi the JUCO ranks and has quickly parlayed that move into a Big East scholarship.

Okosum joins Michael Glover in the 2007 recruiting class. The Pirates are still scheduled to have three scholarships to hand out in the 2007 class and adding Okosum, a JUCO recruit, does offer a little more in the way of class balance for the program.

In a recent article by Andy Katz at ESPN, he remarked how hard Bobby Gonzalez has hit the recruiting trail, not only in search of 2007 prospects, but to fill the 2006 class, especially with big men. The main target remains, for 2006, to be Mike Davis. However, it looks like Davis was unable to meet graduation requirements at Notre Dame Prep, so his status remains very much in limbo. A new name in the 2006 mix is Brian Ormon who played one season at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY and one season at Globe Institute Tech in NYC. He sat out last year while fulfilling academic requirements at Globe last season. Ormon is a 6'7 F that would have two years of eligibility for the Pirates.

We still feel that the Pirates need to add at least another impact frontcourt player in the class of 2007 and a similar player on the wing. The big man is going to be hard to find and there does not seem to be an immediate name on the horizon, which might be one of the reasons they locked down the commitment from Okosum. davis could be revisited again for the class of 2007, but this is a player that was originally part of the class of 2005, so how much longer to you wait on him? Brandon Walters in a NYC big man that has Big East potential and could be a target of Seton Hall in the front court.

On the wing the Pirates are definitely in the mix for prep school players Jamine Peterson, Rashod Bishop, Idris Hilliard and the Williams twins, Jerrell and Terrell. They also hope to remain in the mix for combo forward Tyrone Nash who is likely to decide this week if he will accept one of several high-major 2006 offers or attend a year of prep school. The Pirates also remain in the hint for guards such as Mike Cobourn, Chris Smith, Chris Wright and others as a 'just in case' scenario.

Here is our previous Seton Hall report from earlier this summer: Seton Hall Recruiting Report. We will continue to monitor the Pirate recruiting efforts as they happen.
